Google, the Big “G” is the most wanted search engine till date. Can anybody guess why? More search results within a fraction of seconds. This is due to its most popular Page Rank Algorithm which uses Backlinks and Meta data as criteria to refine search results. As I said earlier, whenever we need to present a content over internet, we do it in our known languages, images etc. How can you think this is machine understandable? Silly right! But how are they able to display results for your searches? Here comes the metadata. The problem is that, this won’t be right always. Recently when I googled for few information I was unlucky to get the answers I need. Instead I got this.
What the crap is this? I expected Apache bikes, but there is no single link pointing towards it. Isn’t it! I am not completely blaming Google’s search algorithms. They are improving their search results with many research. And here comes the “Semantic Web“. The term “Semantic web” was coined by the Guru of WWW –Tim Bernes Lee. If the concepts of this algorithm is made to work, then this will be the perfect solution for all the current flaws.
What is SEMANTIC Web?
Semantic = Meaningful
The Web we know, which runs by the meta-data is only human understandable but the Semantic Web is totally different. The ultimate concept of the Semantic Web is to make the machine more sensible to under your content by itself. Here, the uniqueness in Semantic Web is understanding content without Keyword or metadata. It is really thwarting to search the 3 billion static web documents in the WWW. According to Tim Bernes Lee, an efficient Search mechanism is needed to realize the Web 3.0.
Tools used for Semantic Web: There are certain tools that Semantic Web uses to understand the web content by machines. They are:
- XML (eXtensible Mark-up Language)
- RDF (Resource Description Framework)
- RDFS (Resource Description Framework Schema)
- DAML+OIL (DARPA Agent Markup Language+ Ontology Interchange Language)
This helps WWW to provide the meaningful search results. Search Engines like Bing and Google are already trying to use the concepts of Semantic Web. In, Semantic Web still there any many tools yet to be developed. They are all under several development process.
In this Information Technology era, we want machines to be omnipresent than human. Artificial Intelligence concept is getting popularized widely. Human also expect “Search engines” to be intelligent than human. Hence the dream of Tim Bernes Lee to develop an intelligent web is becoming real in this era. Since the current search engine is just a machine, it cannot extract relevant answers every time. Through Semantic web, we try to incorporate intelligence into search engines. Currently, search engines cannot interpret the contents in a web page as it doesn’t know the meaning of the contents in a web page. Because of this, we get irrelevant results despite Google’s intelligent “Page rank Algorithm”.
Page rank algorithms can be easily fooled because it solely depends on back links. For an SEO expert, it is not really a big deal. He can do fraudulent activities to bypass Google’s Search Engine Algorithms like Google Panda, Google Penguin and many more. Still, there are many Black hat SEO techniques to earn Backlinks. Simplest, he can do “301 redirection” to his website to increase his Page Rank. This easily fool Page rank algorithm to list his website in first page of Google’s search.
Meta-data, another criteria to search a web page can also be fooled. I can write some content and list the most popular topics in Meta data. Google cannot find it.
How Semantic Web can overcome Page Rank Algorithm?
Hence the semantic web comes into the picture. Using RDF and OWL, it tries to define every word present in the web page. For every word, meaning is created in W3C consortium. Creators of web page just need to use these tags to create web pages. As a result the whole web remains connected. Take the example of apache. When we create categories for apache like bike, red Indians (its original meaning), web servers etc., we can easily jump to the web pages whose content point to these categories. Thus connectedness with relevance becomes possible with Semantic web. Semantic web also provides criteria like intersection to identify web pages with similar content.
Thus semantic web will become the future. Bloggers should think of a way to fool this as how they are cheating the Page Rank Algorithm. In this case, I consider the SEMANTIC WEB will be a fool-proof Algorithm.
